Drift is a participatory public artwork commissioned by the City of Sydney for the series We Make This City. It is part artificial wonderland, part physical ordeal, an artwork that asks audience members to rethink our experience and understanding of the urban environment. Using water as a principal material and theme, the work investigates Taylors Square and its water fountain as a complex public space both gritty urban passageway and meeting point for the diverse communities of Darlinghurst and Surry Hills. It offers a meditation on the capacity (or possibility) of temporary inflatable artworks to reconfigure and respond to iconic public spaces through a continual process of appearance and disappearance over the period of a month. The project will run until December 18 2011, Thursday through Sunday 4-8.
